Why Gary Lineker was "evicted" from this week's Match of the Day

Gary Lineker was "evicted" from this weekend's edition of Match of the Day - as he was on his way to present Sports Personality of the Year.

Regular host of the BBC Premier League highlight programme Lineker was a conspicuous by his absence, with viewers tuning in to see Dan Walker at the helm.

Lineker has been the headline presenter of Match of the Day since 1999, when he took over from Des Lynam.

And he explained his absence on Twitter - which also meant missing his beloved Leicester's draw with Norwich.

Lineker tweeted on Saturday afternoon: “First  @LCFC  game I’ve not watched in years as travelling to Aberdeen for  @BBCSPOTY  and now reading on here that it’s now been given as an own goal.”

Lineker will be heading up the BBC's prestigious awards show on Sunday night alongside Clare Balding and Gabby Logan.

Dina-Asher Smith, Lewis Hamilton, Katarina Johnson-Thompson, Alun Wyn Jones, Raheem Sterling and Ben Stokes are up for the main award.

Walker is not an unfamiliar face to football fans on the BBC, having presented Football Focus for over a decade, been a part of numerous World Cup coverage and is no stranger to Match of the Day.

And he introduced to programme with a comedy skit referencing Ian Wright's return to the studio after his stint in I'm A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here.

"Gary has been evicted for one week only," Walker began.

"But it is a pleasure to say a Match of the G'Day again to Ian Wright. He is out of the jungle and there is only one question, have you eaten?"

A cake was then dropped from the ceiling accompanied with various toy creepy-crawlies and traditionally Australian animals - alluding to the trials Wright endured in the jungle.

Walker added: "We didn't want to take any chances so we have a Victoria Sponge on standby just in case."
