Why Gabriel was not in Arsenal squad for pre-season friendly against AC Milan today

Gabriel missed Arsenal’s first pre-season friendly against AC Milan as he continues his rehabilitation from the hamstring injury that forced him to sit out the end of last season.

The centre-back was absent from the Arsenal squad in Singapore, as Christian Norgaard was handed a start and Martin Zubimendi was named on the bench.

Gabriel injured his hamstring in April and was forced to undergo surgery, which saw him miss the final eight Premier League games of the season and Champions League ties against Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain.

Mikel Arteta spoke positively about Gabriel’s recovery this week, revealing the Brazilian played 45 minutes during a behind-closed-doors friendly against Watford last weekend.

But he was left out of the Arsenal squad against AC Milan on Wednesday.

Arsenal said: “Gabriel is not included in the squad at all as he continues his rehab from last season’s hamstring injury.”

Jurrien Timber, who had ankle surgery in May, was also absent from the squad for the game, but the club have not said why.

In Gabriel’s absence, Arteta opted to pair Riccardo Calafiori alongside William Saliba at centre-back.

Bukayo Saka captained the team, with Martin Odegaard on the bench.
