Why FSG apologised to Jurgen Klopp when he joined Liverpool

Jurgen Klopp has revealed Liverpool owners Fenway Sports Group sent an apology over the state of the playing squad following his appointment as manager in 2015.

The German completely transformed Brendan Rodgers' Liverpool squad from challengers to world champions, adding a Champions League trophy and Premier League crown along the way.

Klopp and his recruitment team have overseen a huge overhaul of the playing squad, with Jordan Henderson the only player still at the club from the Liverpool side that finished second in the 2013/14 season.

Liverpool's poor recent form is now giving a new test to Klopp - who was not expected to immediately improve fortunes when handed the manager's job five years ago.

When asked about the difference in pressure by RB Leipzig manager Julian Nagelsmann in a conversation ahead of tonight's Champions League clash, Klopp revealed Liverpool's owners FSG apologised for the squad he inherited.

"To be honest I just like winning games, I've never had this other stuff," he told UEFA.TV.

"The owner system in England is something which...everyone thinks about Roman Abramovich. I don't know he's like, I'm sure he is a huge personality with a big yacht.

"No, I have a very close relationship with the owners, they give me a lot of support.

"I got a few text messages from America, almost apologising for the team they'd given me and I'd say 'it's all good, it's fine, calm down, it takes time'.

"With Dortmund it was very similar.

"I was very naive when I arrived there, I never asked the leadership anything and then I would go 'oh s***, I didn't ask them that. It was made clear when I arrived that there was no money."
