Why Fred is on the bench for Manchester United vs Villarreal in Europa League final

Fred has been left out of the Manchester United side for the Europa League final after he failed to recover from an injury picked up against Fulham eight days ago.

The midfielder played the full game against the Cottagers at Old Trafford but he picked up a knock during the contest and wasn't in the squad to face Wolves at the weekend.

Fred did train with the rest of the United squad in Gdansk on Tuesday evening, but he wore a neutral bib in the final practice game and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer felt he couldn't be risked for the full game against Villarreal.

That means Paul Pogba starts alongside Scott McTominay, with Marcus Rashford on the left and Mason Greenwood on the right of United's front three.

"Fred has been injured this week, he only trained last night, he got through the session but we didn’t want to risk him for the full 90. He got that knock against Fulham, but this team has played together before so we’re ready," Solskjaer told MUTV.

“We do it in our own way, in our spirit, it’s attacking football, pace, power, quality."

Harry Maguire is also on the bench having not trained since injuring his ankle ligaments two-and-a-half weeks ago and Solskjaer said he would only be used in an emergency.

“He’s not ready, he’s not trained, but we have him on the bench and if there’s an emergency he will want to come on, he’s a leader in the dressing room, a player everyone respects and we need around the place," said Solskjaer.

United are seeking to win their first trophy since winning this competition in May 2017 and Solskjaer has told his players to stick to what they know against the La Liga side.

“I don't think they’re nervous, I think they’re very confident, they’re excited, which they should be," he said.

"I said to them play with confidence, play with courage, trust the way we’ve played to get here, don’t change in a final, play our own way and if we get a good performance the result should come."
