Why Fornals, Masuaku and Balbuena won't travel to China for West Ham's pre-season tour

West Ham trip Pablo Fornals, Fabian Balbuena and Arthur Masuaku have not been named in the 23-man squad heading to China this weekend for the Premier League Asia Trophy.

The Hammers can take a maximum of 25 players away for the two games in the Far East but have left a couple of spots available - you never know, it could be for new signings.

The trio who are not making the trip are not flying out because they have been given some time off following their international exertions this summer but are expected to return to training when the players return to London after their China jolly.

Fornals scooped glory with Spain's U21s earlier this summer when they won the Euro U21 championship in Italy and the Hammers £25m recruit from Villarreal had a prominent role, playing four times.

Balbuena reached the quarter finals of the Copa America with Paraguay last month before his side were knocked out by eventual champions Brazil on penalties. The Hammers centre back was sent off against the Brazilian's shortly into the second half.

Masuaku meanwhile didn't feature prominently for DR Congo as they were knocked out at the last 16 stage of the Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt. The Hammers left back started the first game of the tournament, a defeat to Uganda, but didn't play any minutes after that before they were knocked out by minnows Madagascar.

Declan Rice and Lukasz Fabianski were also on international duty earlier this summer but they have already had their breaks and joined up with the squad for the second week of the training camp in Switzerland and both were included in the 23-man party heading to Nanjing and Shanghai.

Noteable omissions from the squad selection were Jordan Hugill, Sam Byram, Nathan Holland, Reece Oxford, Joe Powell and Marcus Browne. Academy graduates Ben Johnson and Josh Cullen were included in the touring party, as was Grady Diangana and football.london understands the winger was particularly impressive in the training camp in Bad Ragaz.

Confirmed West Ham squad: West Ham United Premier League Asia Trophy squad:  Antonio, Cresswell, Cullen, Diangana, Diop, Felipe Anderson, Fredericks, Chicharito, Fabianski, Johnson, Lanzini, Martin, Noble, Obiang, Ogbonna, Reid, Rice, Roberto, Sanchez, Snodgrass, Wilshere, Yarmolenko, Zabaleta
