Why former Sunderland striker could miss out on play-off reunion

Former Sunderland forward James Vaughan is set to miss out on Thursday night's play-off second leg at Fratton Park.

Vaughan was missing from the Portsmouth squad for Saturday's first leg, which saw the Black Cats emerge 1-0 victors thanks to Chris Maguire's second-half strike.

But while Pompey have injury concerns over several forwards ahead of the second leg , manager Kenny Jackett hinted that Vaughan, on loan from Wigan Athletic, would again miss out.

Speaking ahead of Thursday's clash on the south coast, Jackett said: "James wasn’t in today, but he’s in tomorrow. He’s currently at home.

"He wasn’t selected on Saturday but, if selected Thursday night, he will be there. If selected.

"James is definitely part of the consideration, 100 per cent.

"On Saturday, in terms of the No 9 with Oli Hawkins and Omar Bogle fit, the options to use him are minimal.

"He is under consideration and available for selection, should I choose him."
