Why former Rangers and Arsenal star Giovanni van Bronckhorst has been at Man City

Giovanni van Bronckhorst has been spending time at the City Football Academy as the latest stage of his football education.

But the former Arsenal and Barcelona star is not expected to join Manchester City in an executive or coaching role.

The 44-year-old Dutch international was reported to be lined up for a top job with the City Football Group (CFG) after it became apparent that he has been spending time at the club – and is expected to move on to New York City and possibly other clubs in the group.

But van Bronckhorst, who quit as Feyenoord manager in the summer, has not been lined up for a job with the club, or the group.

MEN Sport understands he is simply gathering experience of how the club, and the CFG, runs its business.

The CFG is an innovative approach from City to extend their influence, commercial interests and scouting network, and has been key to the Blues’ rise up football’s financial table.

Van Bronckhorst is thought to be interested in both the business model and the football set-up at City, where the blueprint for Pep Guardiola ’s style of football begins with the under-eights.
