Why former Newcastle United star Tino Asprilla has ended up in hospital

Former Newcastle striker Tino Asprilla has calmed fans’ fears after he was pictured in a hospital bed following hand surgery.

The Colombian forward, now 49, was pictured in hospital with his hand heavily bandaged.

But the man who famously scored a hat-trick as Newcastle defeated Barcelona in a 1997 Champions League clash, moved to assure fans he's OK - and blamed his hand injury on too much tweeting.

“It is not all parties, on the road to recovery after surgery in my hand over here," he messaged.

“I hope to be ready for the little match in San Andres with @nicolasgob, @aristigol09, @JJTrellezV and whoever else come along.

“My hand got messed up after so much tweeting.”

The Colombian moved to Tyneside from Parma in a £6.7mi move in February 1996, arriving at St James’ Park wearing a fur coat in the snowy conditions.

He made an instant impact for Kevin Keegan's side, coming off the bench against at the Riverside Stadium against Middlesbrough to set up a goal, despite having consumed a glass of wine prior to kick off.

Asprilla made a total of 48 appearances for Newcastle in the Premier League scoring nine times and assisting a further 14.
