Why firefighters were called to St Werburghs this afternoon

Firefighters were called to an incident in St Werburghs this afternoon (April 18).

An eyewitness, Caitlin Prosser, initially alerted Bristol Live to the fire by saying she saw it at around 12:20pm.

A spokesperson for Avon Fire and Rescue has confirmed it was called out to a fire in St Werburghs.

They said: "A BMW accidentally ignited in James Street around 12.33pm.

"A fire crew from Temple dealt with it."

The service has been particularly busy during lockdown due to a rise in arson attacks.

Firefighters have been called to more than 100 deliberate fires since the start of lockdown on March 23 - including 10 in one day.

Simon Shilton, assistant chief fire officer for Avon Fire and Rescue, said: “It is so disappointing to see that at a time when we all need to be coming together to support one another we still have people committing crimes and ruining our local communities."
