Why firefighters closed a Bristol city centre street today

Firefighters blocked off a Bristol city centre street after a fire broke out at a student flat.

Colston Street was closed in both directions today (Saturday, July 4), and the northbound side remained shut as of 4.45pm, according to traffic service Inrix.

Avon Fire and Rescue Service was called out at about 12.30pm to a fire at a student flat, near Colston Hall.

Gareth Lloyd, a station manager, said the fire started "in the area of a cooker" and several vehicles attended - two fire appliances, a turntable ladder from Bedminster, as well as a fire engine from Temple Back.

The fire caused smoke-logging in the first floor of flats, but all residents were accounted for and nobody was injured.

The closure affects the stretch between the junctions with Pipe Lane and Colston Yard.

A staff member at Fifty Fifty Store in Colston Street said firefighters dealt with the situation quickly, although one fire engine remained on scene at about 2pm.

He said the fire appeared to have been upstairs at a neighbouring property.

He added: "There were five fire trucks and a bunch of firefighters, I didn't really see much.

"It smelt like smoke, like a bonfire.

"It was handled in a really calm and professional way."

First Bus said it had diverted its T1 and Y1 buses via Park Road and Park Street, and that it was not serving its stop opposite Colston Hall.
