Why experts say having a lie-in could be good for women's health, but bad for men

It's probably fair to say that most of us love nothing better than a long-lie on a lazy day off.

You could argue that's pretty much what the weekends and holidays are really for.

However some slightly unexpected new research claims that it could actually be bad for your health – but only if you're a man.

As reported on RSVP Live , a study published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism discovered that females could reduce their risk if getting diabetes by sleeping-in later.

However, bizarrely, the opposite can be said for men.

According to research on the link between gender, sleep and insulin levels, sleeping too much or too little was related to less responsiveness of the cells in the body to insulin.

Dr Femke Rutters from the VU Medical Centre in Amsterdam told The Sun: "In a group of nearly 800 healthy people, we observed sex-specific relationships between sleep duration and glucose metabolism.

"In men, sleeping too much or too little was related to less responsiveness of the cells in the body to insulin, reducing glucose update and thus increasing the risk of developing diabetes in the future.

"In women, no such association was observed. This research shows how important sleep us to a key aspect of health."
