Why every man needs to be wearing a chunky knit

Forget Steve McQueen’s leather jackets, or James Dean’s turtlenecks, the menswear trend du jour is the BFJ. That’s Big Fisherman Jumper, as seen on Adam Driver.

The actor has been pictured wearing a chunky cream knit tucked into ivory salopettes on the set of his upcoming Ridley Scott-directed crime drama, House of Gucci, with his co-star Lady Gaga by his side.

Driver, who stars as Maurizio Gucci in the film, channels the enduring appeal of Chris Evans’s viral Aran knit from 2019 film, Knives Out. Just a quick search of Evans’s name on Google retrieves pages of paeans written to the crewneck he wore in the film. Now, it’s all about chunkier it-knits with handy turtlenecks to disguise any evidence of the “corona stone”.

The designer behind Driver’s knit is unknown but if you want a BFJ start with sustainable knitwear brand Finisterre, whose Submariner jumper struggles to stay in stock.

If you want an investment piece look at Alexander McQueen, which gifted creamy Aran knits to the attendees of its autumn/winter 2018 Paris Fashion Week show.

White is a bold choice, so if you’re not feeling as strong as Driver, you can’t go wrong with navy.
