Why Everton goal vs Manchester United was disallowed by VAR

PGMOL have confirmed that VAR ruled out Dominic Calvert-Lewin's goal against Manchester United as Gylfi Sigurdsson was offside and directly impacted David de Gea 's ability to make a save.

The United shot stopper made a fantastic save to keep the scores level but Everton had the rebound in the back of the net.

Calvert-Lewin fired a low shot past a crowd of United defenders and Sigurdsson - who was still on the ground from the earlier phase of play - managed to lift his feet out the way of the deflected effort.

The goal was awarded by on-field referee Chris Kavanagh but it was chalked out shortly after following a VAR review which frustrated the home crowd and Everton boss Carlo Ancelotti.

PGMOL have confirmed that Sigurdsson's involvement resulted in the decision.

Their statement reads: "In the 91st minute of Everton v Manchester United, Dominic Calvert-Lewin's goal was disallowed following a VAR Review for an offside against Gylfi Sigurdsson.

"The on-field decision was to award the goal, but the VAR advised the referee that Sigurdsson was in an offside position directly in the line of vision of David de Gea and made an obvious action that impacted de Gea's ability to make a save."

Former Manchester United midfielder Roy Keane gave his opinion on the decision following the game.

He believes United would have felt aggrieved to lose two points by such a goal.

Keane told Sky Sports: "I think he was in-line with the ball and I don't think De Gea would have saved it.

"If it was allowed I think we would have had Ole on the pitch speaking to the referee.

"Sigurdsson should have gotten out of the way and I can see why Everton are disappointed but I do think they got the right decision."
