Why Everton and Liverpool fans may soon have to look beyond BT Sport

BT are looking to sell their BT Sport arm of the business, according to reports.

Since 2013 when BT poured huge sums into launching the platform it has held considerable broadcasting rights for the Premier League and been the biggest competitor to the established Sky, partnered with the Premier League since its formation in 1992.

But according to the Financial Times, BT is now looking to sell the business on as it focuses on investing more money in its broadband business through fibre improvement and investments in 5G technology.

BT has hired financial advisors Lazard to look into the sale of the BT Sport business, with discussions having already taken place with broadcasters including DAZN, Amazon and Walt Disney, as well as private equity firms.

For Everton and Liverpool fans it means that they may have to change direction with their subscription packages further down the line should they wish to have access to to all of the scheduled live games in the Premier League.

The Premier League, according to reports in Sport Business earlier this week, has negotiated the rights for the next cycle, from 2022 to 2025, for the same sum as was brought in for the previous three years - £1.5bn per year.

That has been seen as a success given the impact of the pandemic, and clubs will have the security at least of knowing that they will be receiving the same as last year and not have to see reductions as has been seen in other major leagues across Europe through lesser broadcast deals.

But how soon BT Sport look to sell remains unclear as they are one of the three broadcasters, along with Sky and Amazon, to have taken the rights for the next three years in the Premier League.

DAZN have been linked with getting involved in the Premier League TV market for some time having achieved great success with their boxing coverage and seen large growth in recent years.
