Why England get another substitution in opening World Cup match after Iran concussion

England will be able to make up to six substitutions during their opening World Cup fixture against Iran.

Gareth Southgate's side are currently in action in Group B and will be able to make an additional change during the contest as a result of a concussion change made by the Three Lions' opponents.

Iran's keeper Alireza Beiranvand was forced off on a stretcher in the 20th minute after a collision inside his penalty area. The 30-year-old was withdrawn from the field of play following examinations from his side's medical team, which lasted several minutes as England players patiently watched on.

As a result of this concussion substitution being activated by Iran, England will now be able to introduce six players during the contest if Southgate wishes to rest players for their next fixture against USA on Friday. As per rules set out by the The International Football Association Board [IFAB] , in the event of one team having to make a change due to clear symptoms of concussion - or clear video evidence thereof - the opposing team will also be allowed to make an additional substitution at a time of their choosing.
