Emile Smith Rowe went back to tradition in the North London Derby against Tottenham as he was decked out in blacked out boots.
In what is a break from the norm during the modern game’s bright and distinctive boot designs, the Arsenal youngster elected just to go for something slightly more simplistic.
There is a good reason for that decision however, and it is not just a style issue for the youngster.
According to David Ornstein of The Athletic, Smith Rowe’s previous boot deal with manufacturers Nike has expired and the young midfielder has not yet renewed or found an alternative option.
It is suggested that the 21-year-old is currently in a six-month period where Nike can match any offers that he may receive.
That however does not necessarily mean Smith Rowe has free reign over his boot choices going forwards.
It is also reported that despite the fact of his contract ending, the midfielder is still not permitted to wear another brand - hence why his particular set of boots were completely blacked out and devoid of any branding.
Of course, the footwear situation did not do Smith Rowe any harm at all with the youngster playing a key part in a fantastic Arsenal victory against their north London rivals.
He opened the scoring by slotting home Bukayo Saka’s low ball before his fellow Hale End graduate also managed to find the net before the half-time break as Mikel Arteta’s men raced into a 3-0 lead - Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang the other to get his name on the scoresheet.
Smith Rowe expressed his delight at the win and of course his goal after the game.
Speaking to Sky Sports following the final whistle, he said: “It’s probably the best day of my life. I’ve always dreamt of this day to score for Arsenal against Tottenham. With my family here it’s the best feeling ever.”
