Why Edinson Cavani isn't in Manchester United squad vs Man City

Manchester United are without Edinson Cavani for the derby at the Etihad after the striker limped out of training on Saturday.

The 34-year-old only returned from the sidelines on Wednesday night, playing 76 minutes of the goalless draw at Crystal Palace, but he's now back on the treatment table.

Cavani wasn't spotted arriving at The Lowry Hotel with the rest of the United squad on Saturday night and Solskjaer has confirmed he picked up a late problem which has ruled him out of the game.

But Anthony Martial is back from his own lay-off and starts in place of Cavani.

“He [Cavani] had to come off training yesterday, he didn’t feel right," Solskjaer told MUTV. "Anthony is available and that’s good news."

The return of Victor Lindelof, Scott McTominay, Daniel James and Martial means United have 10 of the 11 that won in the Premier League at City last season starting again.

Bruno Fernandes replacing Jesse Lingard is the only alteration from that league fixture and Solskjaer has urged his players to reproduce that display from December 2019.

“We have to go back into the memory bank at times, when you’ve ‘struggled’ a little bit you’ve got to draw on those experiences," he said. "We’ve been here, how did it feel, what did it make you do, these days live in your memory and we know we can give them problems."
