Why ectopic pregnancy hospital admissions are rising across England

  • Hospital admissions for ectopic pregnancies in England have significantly risen, with an average increase exceeding 4 per cent annually since 2021, following an earlier rise between 2004 and 2012.
  • New research from the University of Liverpool indicates that women falling pregnant at older ages may be a contributing factor to this upward trend.
  • The study also revealed a stark disparity, with women residing in England's most deprived areas consistently experiencing higher rates of admission for ectopic pregnancies compared to those in more affluent regions.
  • Admissions among women aged 40 and over increased from approximately 7 per cent in 2013 to 12 per cent in 2024, aligning with the national shift towards delayed childbearing.
  • Researchers suggest that higher rates in deprived areas are linked to factors such as increased smoking and obesity prevalence, alongside lower access to early maternity care.
