Why DT Ndamukong Suh should be on Seahawks’ free-agent radar

After spending only one season in Los Angles with the Rams, it appears defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh could be hitting the open market come the start of free agency.

At 32 years old, Suh might be in the last half of his career, but there is still plenty of gas left in the tank. A durable warrior, Suh’s only missed games over his career came as the result of a suspension for dirty play in 2011 and weren’t injury related. He’s started every game since.

In a special to ESPN Insider, Pro Football Focus named one free-agent signing every team should make. Suh topped the list for the Seahawks.

“Sacks are one thing, but pressures are another,” PFF notes. “One is an impact play that isn’t predictable from one year to the next, and the other directly predicts future sack totals. Suh excelled in the latter category, as he didn’t have quite the sack totals of previous seasons but still finished with the 12th-most pressures among interior defensive linemen. Suh’s 20th-ranked run-defense grade proves he’s no one-trick pony, and he would add a veteran presence to potentially mentor Poona Ford and add a mean streak to the Seahawks’ defensive interior that it hasn’t had in some time.”

Seattle is clearly intent on strengthening the defensive line and designating defensive end Frank Clark with the franchise tag is one step in the right direction. Adding Suh on a one-year deal that doesn’t break the bank could be a second step worth taking.
