Why Donald Trump wears oversized ties, according to Chris Christie

Donald Trump’s love of over-long ties is well documented, and the reason behind his sartorial choice has finally been revealed.

Chris Christie, the former governor of New Jersey, shares the presidential fashion tidbit in his new memoir, Let Me Finish, where he describes the conversations he’s had with Trump regarding appearance, according to The Guardian.

In 2016, Trump told his potential running mate that he should wear a longer tie so he would appear thinner during the presidential campaign.

Trump lives by his advice – as he regularly makes appearances in ties that extend far past his belt.

But according to GQ, the president’s style choices may be backfiring – as the men’s fashion magazine says “a man’s tie should fall right in the middle of his waistband or his belt.”

In addition to committing a fashion faux pas when it comes to the length of his ties, the president is also guilty of affixing tape to them so they stay put, a method that has repeatedly proved ineffective.

Mr Trump clearly believes appearances are important; during one conversation in 2005, Trump reportedly told Christie “you gotta look better to be able to win” in politics.

Chris Christie’s memoir will be released later this month.
