Why does Stewartry Agricultural Show remain so popular with people of all ages?

Stewartry Show is one of the main highlights in Galloway’s agricultural calendar.

And last week’s event was generally felt to to be one of the best in recent years.

There’s no doubt it acts as a showcase for some of the best livestock in Scotland – and this year was no exception.

But why does the show remain so popular with people young and old? The News asked spectators round the ring for their views.

For Castle Douglas girl Stephanie Phillips, 29, the annual event is something not to be missed.

Stephanie said: “I’ve brought my wee boy Brody to see the animals.

“Then my mum’s coming to get him so I can go for a drink with the girls.

“The show is a great day day out and it’s the only time we all get together and have a good laugh.”

Stephanie’s pal Lucy Miskimming, 32, was also enjoying the sunshine. Lucy, from Castle Douglas, said: “We come every year and it’s a social event for all the girls. We have a wee walk round the show then make our way to the beer tent.

“I’m not really interested in the livestock. They are important to the show but I would not stand and watch them.”

Drew Alexander (Drew Geddes)

Drew Alexander’s association with Stewartry Show stretches right back to the early days.

Castle Douglas man Drew, 80, said: “I was at the first Stewartry Show at the Brig o’ Dee in the late 1940s. I must have been only seven or eight and I have been coming off and on ever since.

“I’m enjoying my day. I like the social side and meeting friends I haven’t seen since last year.”

Rosanna Houston. (Drew Geddes)

Rosanna Houston, from Dundrennan, was celebrating after her Anglo-Arab horse Cassius won the Hardy Lad Trophy for the second year in succession.

Rosanna, 42, said: “I think it’s very important these shows keep going because it’s good for the community. It gets people together and brings in money.

“The show is great for meeting people as well.”
