Why does Mitchum deodorant burn? Company issues statement

Social media users have reported burning, pimples, and rashes associated with one of Mitchum's roll-on deodorants.

TikTok users who used the brand's 48-hour roll-on deodorant and anti-perspirant shared videos of their redness and irritation.

Some stated the discomfort had prevented them from going for a run, while others compared the experience to “volcanoes erupting” out of their armpits.

What to do if you experience a rash or a burn from a deodorant

  • Immediately wash the area to remove residue.
  • Apply aloe vera or a lotion of your choice to soothe the skin. Over-the-counter hydrocortisone cream can also help with inflammation.
  • Avoid using the product and switch to a fragrance-free, hypoallergenic product.
  • The rash or burn should improve after a few days on its own.
  • But if your symptoms worsen or spread, consult your GP.

But why does the deodorant burn so much and has Mitchum said anything?

Why does Mitchum deodorant burn so much?

One user on TikTok, under the username @ellierebecca_, claimed: “I’ve been suffering really bad with chafing marks under my arms, I thought it was from running and it isn’t.

One quick search on Tiktok shows this has been going on for over a month and I was totally oblivious to it… The marks have been awful, not only unbelievably painful but also embarrassing for people to see especially during holiday season 🙂 I don’t know the specifics of what has caused this to happen to so many thousands of people, but @mitchumuk @mitchum seriously need to do something about this!! #mitchum #mitchumdeodorant

“The marks have been awful, not only unbelievably painful but also embarrassing for people to see especially during holiday season.”

Ellie clarified that she “skipped runs and things like that because I've physically not been able to put my arm down because the pain's been so bad” before concluding that her deodorant was the culprit.

She added: “They’re like chemical burns, AVOID. I hope they go out of business for the pain and trauma they’ve caused me.”

Ellie’s TikTok video which reached over two million views in 24 hours is one of the many videos circulating the app where people are sharing their impacted armpits.

This has caused a lot of discussion around the brand's alleged alteration of an ingredient in its Mitchum 48-hour 100ml Roll-On anti-perspirant and deodorant formula.

But it turns out this isn’t the case.

What has the company said?

Mitchum UK has apologised and acknowledged that the issue was caused by the brand switching to a different production method following an investigation.

The company has now gone back to the original procedure because the upgraded method affected a small batch of the roll-on sold in the UK, Ireland, and South Africa.

A Mitchum UK spokesperson said in a statement: “Consumer wellbeing is always our priority, and we are truly sorry some of our customers have experienced temporary irritation. This is not the experience they expect from us.

“We take this kind of feedback extremely seriously and have worked hard to investigate the cause.

“We want to reassure there has been no change to the formula of our products, but we have identified a change in the manufacturing process affecting one of our raw materials.”

Customers who are having problems are encouraged to get in touch with the Customer Care department of Mitchum UK. This has not impacted any other Mitchum products.
