Why does Channel 4 keep crashing and going off air?

Channel 4 and More4 went off air over the weekend due to a "technical problem", according to the broadcaster.

Viewers complained, saying that their screens showed a still from a programme for about 25 minutes before returning to normal broadcasting.

Moments later, the channel was said to have frozen again. Meanwhile, More 4 showed flashing images according to other viewers, while some said Film4 and E4 were also affected.

The broadcaster confirmed two channels were temporarily off air in a tweet that read: "Channel 4 and More 4 are currently off air due to a technical problem. We are working to restore them as quickly as possible."

The tweet didn't mention the other programmes said to be affected.

Red Bee Media, which handles playout services for Channel 4 and 5, said the disruption was due to an "activation of the fire suppression systems" on Saturday evening.

The reason for the disruption was explained by the Welsh Channel 4 account, which confirmed that following a fire at a London distribution centre, they were experiencing technical problems. The centre was swiftly evacuated.

Some people found a funny side to the technical issues, with one tweet reading: "Someone's been panic buying Channel 4 programmes."
