Why do we never see “mongrel” birds? Why does a blackbird never mate with a thrush or, especially, a hedge sparrow with a dunnock? I asked the Natural History Museum and they said that different species don’t fancy each other – but that doesn’t apply to dogs, and, given that there must be millions of bird matings each day, why has there never been a “mistake”?
