Why do schools close when it snows?

When cold weather hits schools across thee country close their doors, warning parents they won't be open - sometimes for days at a time.

Councils have previously stated they "do not make a blanket decision to close all schools due to inclement weather."

Instead the headteacher determines whether children can travel safely to and from school, and decides if the site will remain safe throughout the day.

A risk assessment is conducted taking into account factors including:

1. The state of pathways, steps and slopes around the school;

2. Condition of roads and pathways in the local area;

3. If the school's heating, lighting and water is working correctly;

4. Whether catering can be provided;

5. Availability of public transport and school coaches;

6. The weather forecast.

Schools may also need to close due to other unforeseen circumstances such as heating failure, or a burst water pipe, reports the Sentinel.

The issue of school closures can prove particularly contentious when nearby businesses, for example, stay open.

Again the reason for this is there are more health and safety considerations affecting a school – such as staff ratios, which will be hit if teachers are unable to travel in, as well as factors such as the playground being too icy to walk on safely.

Most shops do not have to worry about taking responsibility for icy roads and pavements.

Schools are told to make a decision to close as early as possible, in order to inform parents and carers in good time.

Parents can now sign up to text and email lists to alert them to school closures as soon as a decision is made.
