Why do peanut butter jars have that awkward rim at the top?

Why do peanut butter jars always have a rim at the top and/or bottom, which makes them difficult to scrape the remnants from and also difficult to clean before recycling? I have found this across many brands, suggesting that perhaps it serves some kind of purpose relating to its manufacture or storage.
