Why do insects in the garden eat me alive but leave my partner alone?

When gardening, I get eaten alive by (to me) invisible and silent enemies. They reach all the nooks and crannies that I imagine would crush mosquitoes; and I think they hide away somewhere to have second helpings later. The bites really itch. What are they? Why do they find me so much tastier than my husband? And what would they be torturing if I wasn’t there?
