Why did the Texans bring back CB Briean Boddy-Calhoun?

A wave of injuries has hit the Houston Texans secondary, such to the point they are looking to members of their 90-man roster who didn’t make the cut to save the fill the gaps.

The Texans signed cornerback Briean Boddy-Calhoun to their 53-man roster on Wednesday, and coach Bill O’Brien told reporters it was his work ethic along with his familiarity with the system that kept him fresh in their minds.

“You bring a guy back that’s a good guy, he works very hard, he has a really good understanding of [what] we’re trying to do,” O’Brien said. “He understands the terminology, he knows the guys, so it’s easy to communicate.”

The Texans initially signed the former 26-year-old on March 15 to a one-year contract. Houston kept him on their 90-man roster all throughout their nine-week offseason workout program and into training camp before waiving him on Aug. 31 as part of their mandatory cut down to a 53-man roster.

In the meantime, the 2016 undrafted Minnesota product has been waiting for his chance to land back on an NFL roster. How fortunate for Calhoun he is going back to a system he spent all offseason learning, and for the Texans, how fortunate to sign a guy who needs no introductions.

“It’s not like he’s got to come in here and get to know everybody,” O’Brien said. “He knows them. When we introduced him to the team this morning, the team was excited to have him back, so yeah, there’s a lot that goes into having a guy that you’ve had before. No doubt.”

The Texans may get back cornerback Johnathan Joseph against the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 9 at Wembley Stadium in London, as the 35-year-old was a full participant in Wednesday’s practice. Still, they have to work through cornerback injuries with Gareon Conley (hamstring) and Bradley Roby (hamstring) limited and rookie Lonnie Johnson not a participant due to a concussion sustained against the Oakland Raiders in Week 8.
