Why did Ireland not hit its Covid-19 vaccine target last week? And will we meet it this week?

Ireland's vaccine rollout continues to trudge on but there has been much criticism about the pace of the rollout here.

While the country has managed to vaccinate a large cohort of healthcare and frontline staff as well as a significant portion of the elderly population there has been huge pressure on the government to speed up the rollout.

A number of factors have hindered Ireland's progress since the first jabs were approved by the European Medicines Agency.

Last week Tanaiste Leo Varadkar said that the HSE was on track to administer 100,000 Covid jabs by the end of last week.

However it has since emerged that we failed to reach that target and a significantly lower number of 81,000 vaccines were given throughout the week.

Here's where things went wrong:

To date the biggest factor affecting vaccine rollout both in Ireland and in other nations is vaccine supply.

And it appears that was the main reason for missing last week's target.

In the week from last Monday to Sunday, the HSE administered 81,843 doses of Covid-19 vaccine.

The reason for the shortfall was due to late deliveries from AstraZeneca leading to 25,000 doses last week and this week being deferred.

Will we meet this week's target?

Unfortunately it looks like we are set to miss this week's target too with deferred delivery also hampering the rollout this week.

However the HSE has said that it should be on track to reach its target for March in the coming weeks meaning the shortfall shouldn't affect this months plans.
