Why Declan John came off at half-time of Bolton Wanderers' FA Cup draw with Stockport County

Bolton Wanderers defender Declan John was taken off at half-time of the draw against Stockport County due to chest pains.

The left-back started the FA Cup clash against the Hatters yesterday, with the match to go to a replay at Edgeley Park next week following a 2-2 draw.

League One Wanderers hosted the National League side at the University of Bolton Stadium.

Backed by some 5,000 away supporters who were in fine voice throughout, the visitors took a shock lead when Scott Quigley put them in front, but Wanderers rallied and got back on level terms when Eoin Doyle equalised and then went ahead thanks to Elias Kachunga.

But County equalised in first half stoppage time when Ben Whitfield slotted home, with the tie being taken to a replay at Edgeley Park and the game likely to be played on Tuesday, November 16.

John did not emerge for the second half of the clash against the Hatters, with Liam Gordon taking his place on the left hand side of the defence.

Speaking after the encounter, Evatt revealed that John was taken off due to chest pains and was struggling to breathe after a non-Covid related illness in the week.

Evatt said: “He had one or two chest pains. We don’t know what that is. He’s had a bit of illness in the week.

"Obviously there’s not really Covid issues, but there’s quite a lot of heavy colds flying around and chesty coughs and he’s had one of those.

"He was struggling a bit to breathe.”
