Why Dean Henderson started for Manchester United vs Sheffield United

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer admitted he had long had Dean Henderson down for a Manchester United start against Sheffield United.

United picked an attacking side for the trip to the Blades, with Solskjaer handing Henderson a start in goal ahead of David de Gea, while Bruno Fernandes and Paul Pogba start together in front of Nemanja Matic in midfield.

Solskjaer spoke to MUTV before kick off at Sheffield United and explained the thinking behind his team selection. United are looking to make it 10 away wins in succession.

"It was a game I pencilled in for him early on [this season]. I feel Dean is ready as well to take these games on, because he's played well whenever he's played," said Solskjaer.

"Of course David played really well against Man City, so it's not anything to do with that."

Solskjaer was also asked about his attacking line-up as he reverted to the United front six that played well as a unit after lockdown.

He added: "Yeah we want to go and try to attack the game and get these three points.

"Anthony and Marcus and Mason, if and when we get these firing on all cylinders, create chances and score goals, we're a much better team. Of course Bruno has scored seven or eight goals in the league, but we need our forwards to do more.

"We've given teams enough encouragement lately and last year we did that here [at Bramall Lane] so of course we've got a great record of coming back in games but we want to start well and take the game to them."

United XI: Henderson; Wan-Bissaka, Lindelof, Maguire, Telles; Matic, Fernandes, Pogba; Greenwood, Rashford, Martial.

Subs: De Gea, Shaw, Fred, McTominay, Mata, James, Van de Beek.
