Why David de Gea is starting over Dean Henderson for Manchester United vs Crystal Palace

David de Gea has maintained his place as Manchester United's first-choice goalkeeper after his impressive performances for Spain during the September international break.

The 29-year-old held off the challenge of Dean Henderson, who is on the bench for United in a Premier League game for the first time.

It was Henderson who started last Saturday's friendly against Aston Villa, but De Gea has got the nod to start in the Old Trafford league game against Crystal Palace, with Solskjaer aware he's blessed to have two good options in goal.

“Today [David's] playing, he played well for Spain in the summer and he’s shown really good form in training," he told MUTV. "So has Dean to be fair, he played against Villa and didn’t put a foot wrong. I’m privileged to have the goalkeeping department I have."

Henderson is joined on the bench by £35million new boy Donny van de Beek, with Paul Pogba fit to start in midfield.

The Holland international will have to wait for his United debut, but Solskjaer has confirmed it will come at some point against the Eagles.

“That’s for sure, one he’s a game-changer if we need to but he’s also eager to go and he has qualities we need, even if the game doesn’t demand a change I think we’ll see him," said Solskjaer.

There is a surprise at right-back, with Timothy Fosu-Mensah starting ahead of Aaron Wan-Bissaka, who only returned to training on Monday, as did Nemanja Matic, who misses out on the squad entirely.

“We’ve had a few players just back for a short week, Monday was their first day, some have been three weeks, so the ones who've been training and doing well from the start I felt we had to make those changes and some have to wait a little longer before they’re ready," added Solskjaer.
