Why Crystal Palace were allowed to retake penalty vs Manchester United

The Premier League has confirmed why Crystal Palace were allowed to retake their penalty against Manchester United.

Jordan Ayew saw his effort from 12 yards saved by David de Gea after referee Martin Atkinson controversially awarded the Eagles a penalty after consulting the VAR monitor for handball by Victor Lindelof.

However, despite the miss, play was called back and Wilfried Zaha was allowed to step up and fire Crystal Palace 2-0 ahead.

United pulled a goal back through Donny van de Beek on his debut but Zaha doubled his tally for the afternoon to confirm a 3-1 win for the visitors.

During the match, the Premier League released an explanation for the decision on their official Twitter channel.

They said: "The protocol for goalkeeper encroachment on penalties does not allow for tolerance levels, so if the 'keeper saves a penalty and his foot is over the line then VAR advises it is retaken."

Gary Neville, on commentary duty for the match, labelled the decision to penalise Lindelof for handball as 'nonsense'.

“I’d be devastated if I had a penalty against me for that," he said during the match. "He’s moving with his running action. I thought that Leeds one at Anfield last week was nonsense, and I think this one is equally. Absolutely no chance that is a penalty. Never in a million years.

"If you’re a defender running back to goal, your running action means your arm goes in front of you. No chance. He has not got a clue. That is happening so quickly when you’re running back one-on-one.

"In the swing of the game, Crystal Palace do deserve to be 2-0 up, it’s the way it’s happening that’s a problem.”

On the decision to retake the penalty, he added: “He’s going to retake the penalty. Can you believe it? That is an absolute disgrace.

"He is what, two inches (off his line)? I cannot believe that and he (the penalty taker) actually runs up quite slowly. You’re talking millimetres.

"That is unbelievable. I understand totally if the goalkeeper is flying off his line, gaining one or two yards, but that is, well…

“74 minutes in, they deserve to be 2-0 up, they’ve been far better. Manchester United have been nowhere near them in terms of sharpness, the shape.

"But there is an element of good fortune about how Palace have gained their second goal.”
