Why Cristiano Ronaldo is not in Manchester United squad vs Aston Villa

Ralf Rangnick has confirmed Cristiano Ronaldo is currently sidelined with a hip flexor injury.

Ronaldo missed the victory against Villa in the FA Cup on Monday night but had trained this week ahead of the trip to Villa Park.

The German, speaking ahead of that game, revealed that Ronaldo couldn't train on Friday ahead of Saturday's match, though.

"With Cristiano, it’s unfortunate, it’s still the same problem with his hip flexor," Rangnick told MUTV.

"He couldn't train yesterday [Friday] and I had a conversation with him before and after training.

"After training, we decided that it doesn’t make sense if he’s not feeling fully fit to make the trip here. It makes sense to have treatment at home and hopefully he can be available for Wednesday’s game against Brentford."

Rangnick has made three changes in total from United's 1-0 win against these opponents in the FA Cup third round on Monday night.

Alex Telles, Nemanja Matic and Anthony Elanga have come in, with Luke Shaw and Scott McTominay suspended and Marcus Rashford out of the squad altogether due to injury, but it was Ronaldo's omission from the squad that was the most glaring from the team news.
