Why Cristian Romero has been compared to Cristiano Ronaldo amid Tottenham transfer interest

Tottenham transfer target Cristian Romero has been hailed as "the Ronaldo of defending" amid talk he is on his way to north London.

football.london understands that Tottenham transfer chief Fabio Paratici is in advanced talks with Atalanta over the signing of the defender, with teammate Pierluigi Gollini also set to make the move.

A confirmation still seems some way off though with the two clubs having reportedly not yet agreed on a fee for the services of Romero.

Now, Italian agent Furio Valcareggi has given his verdict on the centre-back, even going as far as comparing him to Juventus and Portugal superstar Cristiano Ronaldo.

Speaking to TuttoMercatoWeb, he said: “He’s [Romero] a great player, very good.

“Prandelli, who managed him, said that he had never seen such a strong player. If I were Paratici and Tottenham, I would take him immediately.

“You will put the defence in place for 10 years. Just like if you take Koulibaly, he sets your defence in one fell swoop. He’s the Ronaldo of defending.”

It is certainly not hard to see why Spurs want the defender considering such praise.

The comparison comes after the 23-year-old’s impressive first season with Atalanta, having joined the Bergamo outfit on loan with an obligation to buy.

He made 42 appearances in all competitions as the Italians reached the last-16 of the Champions League, whilst securing third place in the Serie A standings. Only four teams in Italy beat Atalanta’s defensive record throughout the campaign.

Romero is also a threat at the other end of the pitch, too, having netted three goals and notched five assists in all competitions.
