Why Conor McGregor and Machine Gun Kelly fought at red carpet

Conor McGregor and Machine Gun Kelly almost came to blows at the MTV VMA Awards last night.

The MMA icon, 33, and the American rapper, 31, were both attending the star-studded event in Brooklyn, New York but things became heated on the red carpet before the show.

The eventful scenes played out as Kelly and McGregor stepped out with their respective partners - Megan Fox and Dee Devlin - and were both posing for photographers ahead of the ceremony.

Video of the heated altercation appears to show the situation escalating to the point where Kelly, dressed in a glittery red suit, pushed McGregor, who then stumbled back and spilled or threw his drink.

Early reports suggested the feud rose after McGregor asked MGK for a photo, but the Bloody Valentine star shot him down, which didn't go over too well with the former UFC champion, according to TMZ.

But the incident left MGK's movie star girlfriend Megan Fox stuck between the two stars in a bid to deescalate the tensions before becoming swept up in the scuffle and security stepped in to prize them apart.

But McGregor's people insist the fighter did not approach MGK.

His spokesperson said: ' Conor McGregor did not ask anyone for a picture, nor did he instigate this incident. He does not know Machine Gun Kelly, outside of the fact that he attended Conor's fight this past July.'

MGK refused to comment on what actually when later interviewed on the red carpet.

Both stars have both enjoyed considerable success during their careers in their respective industries and have huge followers.

Although despite each forging their own paths, the pair don't know each other and the reason for the near-altercation isn't clear.

But MGK appeared to leave the red carpet drama behind him as he later secured his second winning title for best Alternative Music Video and was seen jumping in the air as he went up to collect the gong.

He also took to the stage alongside Travis Barker to perform their new single papercuts.

As for Conor, who was wearing a bright pink suit jacket and black pants, was there to present the award for Artist of The Year.

Mirror Online has approached both stars representatives for comment.
