Why Christian Eriksen was complaining and Fred's awful shot - Spurs moments missed vs Man United

Mourinho waits for Solskjaer

Jose Mourinho returned to Old Trafford for the first time on Wednesday evening since his departure as Manchester United boss 12 months ago.

It wasn't one to remember either as his Spurs team slipped to their first defeat under his guidance as they lost 2-1 against the Red Devils.

All eyes were on the head coach ahead of the game as he made his way out of the tunnel and made the walk down the touchline to take his seat in the dugout.

Jose Mourinho full press conference after Man United defeat

Mourinho had actually set off well ahead of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer but he waited a good minute for him on the side before eventually taking his seat for the game.

The pair embraced and enjoyed a big hug before going head-to-head for the points.

Mourinho takes a knock

The Spurs boss found himself in the wars in the first half when standing in his technical area to assess the game.

With Daniel James flying down the wing in possession of the ball, Harry Winks slid across to try and win it back and nullify the danger.

He got nowhere near the ball and in the end fouled the Welshman and received a yellow card for his challenge.

The foul sent the Manchester United summer signing flying in the direction of Mourinho and he unfortunately caught his head on Mourinho's knee.

It clearly hurt the player as he was found down on the ground and the United medical staff had to assess him for a head injury before he was allowed to carry on.

Fred's shot

Manchester United midfielder Fred has come in for a lot of criticism for his performances since joining the club ahead of the 2018/19 season in a big-money deal.

The Brazilian just hasn't justified his price tag and he's not exactly contributed a lot during his time in the Premier League.

The 26-year-old only has one goal to his name so far in England and that came in September 2018 against Wolves.

Well, the midfielder was keen to double his tally as he lined a shot up 20 yards away from goal in the first half.

He probably wished he hadn't bothered as Marcus Rashford had to stop the ball from going out for a throw-in.

Fred skewed his effort that much that the spin on the ball saw his effort actually go behind him.

Solskjaer will no doubt tell him to pass the ball if he gets himself in shooting range again.

Eriksen complains

Christian Eriksen was introduced midway through the second half as Spurs looked for a way back into the game following Rashford's double.

Despite the fact he looks on course to leave the club either in January or the summer because of his contract situation, Mourinho has continued to use him from the bench in his first four games in charge.

The Dane had no impact on proceedings at Old Trafford as the team struggled to create any meaningful chances to test David De Gea in goal.

One thing actually really frustrated him towards the end and it came when Jesse Lingard was replaced by Luke Shaw.

The midfielder was in front of the Sir Alex Ferguson stand but rather than go off at the nearest touchline he went pretty much across the full width of the pitch to exit.

As a new rule came in at the start of the season stating the players have to leave the pitch at the nearest point, Eriksen was quick to tell this to referee Paul Tierney but he allowed Lingard to go all the way across the pitch.

The Spurs man clearly wanted play to resume as soon as possible given the team were trailing but he and his teammates had to wait a bit longer for Shaw to come on.
