Why Chrishell Stause Really Walked Away From Selling Sunset & What She’s Saying Now

Well, it’s official: Chrishell Stause has put down the Oppenheim Group’s luxury keys and said “see ya” to Selling Sunset — and apparently not even Jesus Christ himself could change her mind.

After nine drama-drenched seasons, the Netflix star told Bustle she has finally walked away from the real estate reality juggernaut, citing her mental health and, frankly, exhaustion from the show’s chaos.

“I’ve vacillated back and forth with this decision in the past,” Stause said. “I have to be honest — having come from nothing, it’s really hard to turn something like this down.”

But the decision’s made now, and she’s standing firm. “Jesus Christ himself” couldn’t make her return, nor could Selling Sunset creator Adam DiVello, who she says has been calling and texting her “100 times a day.”

The show hasn’t been officially renewed for a tenth season yet, but Stause made it clear that if Netflix decides to roll out more glossy office feuds, she won’t be part of them.

“I’ve gotten to a place where I don’t need the show financially,” she said. “I’m lucky to have other forms of employment, because it’s no longer good for my mental health.”

If you’ve been watching Selling Sunset even casually (read: by being bombarded with clips online) , you’d have noticed the tension this past season was a lot. Stause clashed with Nicole Young, who brought up her late parents in a heated moment, and later ended a long-time friendship with Emma Hernan after Hernan’s new boyfriend allegedly made anti-LGBTQ+ comments.

In the interview, Stause said she wasn’t thrilled with how the season was edited, claiming some context that “would’ve completely vindicated” her was left on the cutting room floor.

On her Instagram stories this week, Chrishell posted a string of receipts about Emma and her boyfriend Blake telling a story that even Netflix’s editing can’t soften. The posts started with clips from Emma’s interview trying to defend Blake’s pronoun mishaps and paint him as well-meaning — claims Chrishell outright rejected, calling out the minimisation of her partner G Flip’s pronouns and highlighting how the situation spiralled online.

The posts quickly escalated, as Chrishell shared actual images and videos that put Blake’s behaviour under the spotlight. One video showed Blake pushing Emma’s face towards his groin with the charming caption, “When your girl asks what’s for dinner”.

There were Barbie dolls labelled “fat Barbie” and “cr*pple Barbie”, and a series of screenshots showing Blake posting about right-wing pundit Charlie Kirk, adding fuel to the fire about his alleged political leanings.

The pièce de résistance was a poll that appeared to be about Chrishell, reading “Should I sue the bitch for lying her dick off about me,” consolidating the sense that this feud is absolutely cooked.

Still, Chrishell’s not leaving the show bitter — just ready for something healthier. “If they do continue [with another season], I wish them the best,” she told Bustle. “The show has given me so many opportunities, and I don’t want to be bitter about it, even though I’m leaving not in the way that I would’ve loved.”

The realtor didn’t spill on whether or not she’ll also be leaving the Oppenheim Group for good, but at the time of writing she is still listed as one of their agents, so who knows what’s to come.

Side note: her image is next to Nicole’s on the website and I think that’s diabolical given their history. (Image: Oppenheim Group)

Since wrapping season nine, Stause said she’s been focused on IVF and potentially moving to Australia with G Flip. “It was really hard going through IVF through the process of filming Selling Sunset,” she said, noting she plans to give the process another go now that she’s off-camera.

Without Stause, the series loses its biggest name and its only publicly queer cast member — a combo that’s hard to picture Selling Sunset surviving without. But for Chrishell, it’s time to swap the staged showdowns and empty open houses for something that doesn’t come with a Netflix reunion hangover.

As she told Bustle, reflecting on her final taping: “I felt like, ‘Sit here, get through it. You’re not a quitter, but you never have to do this again.’ And I promise you, to your soul, you won’t.”
