Why Chelsea winning the Europa League is crucial to their Champions League hopes next season

Chelsea will play Champions League football again next season.

After a season-long absence thanks to finishing fifth last year, the Blues confirmed their place in the top four this season with a 3-0 win over Watford on Sunday, that coupled with Arsenal's 1-1 draw at home to Brighton, ensured they would be eating at Europe's top table in 2019/20.

Whether that will be with or without their star man Eden Hazard remains to be seen, with question marks still remaining over his future at Stamford Bridge.

But now Champions League football has been guaranteed, thoughts will immediately move on to the draw for the group stages and who the Blues could face.

Their status in the competition, and which pot they will go into is yet to be decided though, with Chelsea in control of their destiny in that respect.

Here's all the latest news ahead of the draw...

Exclusive: Chelsea loanee set to seek permanent transfer from Stamford Bridge this summer

How are seedings worked out?

Seedings are done firstly based on the champions of the top six European league, based on Uefa's member coefficient rankings.

Then they are done on Uefa's club coefficient rankings, filtering down into pot two, three and four.

How do the coefficients work?

The club coefficients are based on the performance of the clubs in European competition over the five previous seasons and determine the seeding of each club in relevant UEFA competition draws.

How do the coefficients stand?

  1. Real Madrid
  2. Barcelona
  3. Bayern Munich
  4. Atletico Madrid
  5. Juventus
  6. Manchester City
  7. Sevilla
  8. Paris Saint-Germain
  9. Arsenal
  10. Porto
  11. Liverpool
  12. Borussia Dortmund
  13. Chelsea
  14. Roma
  15. Napoli
  16. Shakhtar Donetsk
  17. Manchester United
  18. Tottenham Hotspur
  19. Zenit St Petersburg
  20. Ajax

What does that mean for Chelsea?

Chelsea are currently 13th on the club coefficient list, meaning they would be placed in pot two if it were all done on coefficient rankings.

Five of the teams above them have done, or will go on and win their domestic leagues, meaning there is no chance of the Blues dropping into pot three when the draw is made.

However, Chelsea can move into pot one.

How is pot one formed?

Pot one consists of the winners of the top six European leagues - Spain, England, Italy, Germany, France and Russia - plus the winners of the Champions League and Europa League.

So as well as a piece of silverware, there is the added incentive for Maurizio Sarri's side to go and win the Europa League in that they can earn a place in pot one of the Champions League group stage draw and avoid the likes of Barcelona and Juventus.

Pots two, three and four are then sorted by UEFA club coefficient rankings.
