Why Chelsea transfer target Jadon Sancho is not in Borussia Dortmund XI for Bayern Munich clash

Jadon Sancho remains on the Borussia Dortmund bench XI for the crunch Bundesliga clash with Bayern Munich at Signal Iduna Park this evening.

The 20-year-old started the previous two games from the substitutes' bench owing to a lingering calf strain but he contributed an assist for Achraf Hakimi in Saturday's 2-0 win away to Wolfsburg.

In the biggest game of the German season, the Chelsea transfer target is being held in reserve again by head coach Lucien Favre owing to lingering concerns over his fitness.

Sancho has scored or assisted in 30 goals so far this season but was hauled off 36 minutes into the reverse fixture at Allianz Arena.

Bayern won that game 4-0 but Dortmund have taken 38 of the available 48 points since to keep pressure on Hansi Flick's team.

A win for Dortmund would see Bayern's lead on top of the table cut to one point but a seven-point buffer will all but seal the Bavarians' eighth straight title with five more games to play.

Both sides are two from two since the Bundesliga resumed 10 days ago. Dortmund have the league's best home record while Bayern are the most impressive on the road.

The other standout subplot is Erling Haaland coming up against Robert Lewandowski for the first time, while Blues fans will remain interested in the visitors' performance with the second leg of their Champions League round of 16 game still to be rescheduled.

Bayern skewered Frank Lampard's team at Stamford Bridge with dominant performances from left wing back Alphonso Davies and Lewandowski, who is still chasing Gerd Muller's Bundesliga scoring record of 40 goals in a season.

He has 27 from 25 appearances and has a knack for scoring against his former club Dortmund.
