Why Chelsea transfer target Jadon Sancho is not in Borussia Dortmund team to face Wolfsburg

Chelsea fans' interest in this weekend's Bundesliga action may not be as concentrated with the news that Jadon Sancho has not returned to Borussia Dortmund's starting XI for this afternoon trip to Wolfsburg and is instead named on the bench.

The 20-year-old has not completely overcome the minor calf strain that reduced the England international to a brief cameo off the substitutes bench a week earlier.

The South Londoner played the final 12 minutes of the 4-0 win against Schalke at the Westfalenstadion, a game that had already been reduced to training pace with the result beyond all doubt.

Head coach Lucien Favre has chosen against reintroducing his leading scorer and creator from the start against Wolfsurg, who sit sixth and are clinging on to the final Europa League place, with a potential title-decider against Bayern Munich to come on Tuesday.

Sancho has scored 14 Bundesliga goals and created a league-high 15 assists as Dortmund seek to keep the pressure on league leaders Bayern Munich.

Favre has included the electric Erling Haaland up front with another player to have caught Chelsea fans' eyes, Raphael Guerreiro, against Schalke. Thorgan Hazard, the younger brother of Eden, also starts.

A win away to Wolfsburg would close the gap to a solitary point before Bayern face Eintracht Frankfurt in the later game.

Elsewhere Kai Havertz, another Chelsea transfer target, will lead Bayer Leverkusen in their trip to third-place Borussia Monchengladbach.

Havertz found the net twice in a straightforward win away to struggling Werder Bremen on Monday evening.

Among the other notable names for Blues fans, Timo Werner plays for RB Leipzig tomorrow while Ethan Ampadu is again expected to miss out because of a back issue that has troubled the on-loan defensive player since February.
