Why Chelsea's reported interest in Josh Maja could provide Sunderland with January boost

Chelsea are reportedly weighing up a January move for former Sunderland striker Josh Maja.

The 20-year-old frontman has caught the eye of scouts this season, scoring six times for Bordeaux so far, including a hat-trick in a 6-0 victory over Nimes earlier this month.

Blues boss Frank Lampard wants to add competition to his Stamford Bridge squad with the transfer embargo now lifted on the club, and knows he needs players to challenge Tammy Abraham up front, with Maja a reported option.

If Chelsea - or any side - do make a move for Maja in the next transfer window, Sunderland could be set for a boost of their own.

As we reported earlier this year, the Black Cats are believed to have inserted a 10 per cent sell-on clause into the deal when Maja swapped Wearside for Ligue 1 in January 2019, meaning any move will have a knock-on benefit.

Maja struck 16 goals in all competitions for Sunderland before leaving near the end of last January's window for a £1.5m - a price which could rise to £3.5m.

He only scored once for Bordeaux in the remainder of the season, but his form this term has attracted scouts from around Europe.

Speaking after his recent treble,  Maja said: "I feel good and I am very happy to get my first hat-trick for Bordeaux, and in my career.

"Of course, it's a great night for the team also as we picked up three points and played very well. We're going to keep working hard and go into the next game confident."
