Why Chelsea must secure Champions League football to extend a long-running tradition

Chelsea are aiming to get Champions League football, but it is not just for the senior side that it is crucial they get it.

The Blues are in a strong position right now with two Premier League games to go and currently sitting fourth in the table. Meanwhile, they are still in the Europa League semi-final as well.

It means that Maurizio Sarri's side should qualify for the top tier of European football, and that is going to be big news for the youth team as well if they can clinch a spot.

Once again this season, Chelsea's U19s reached the final of the UEFA Youth League, however they were beaten 3-1 by a very strong Porto side in Nyon, Switzerland.

It was the second final in a row that the young Blues side lost, having been beaten 3-0 to Barcelona the year before.

However, what it also means is that next season's U19s class are yet to be guaranteed a place in the competition and they need their senior side to be in it for the 2019/20 campaign.

The youth teams of all the qualified sides in the Champions League get a place in the UEFA Youth League, while Chelsea played in the competition this year having won the 2017/18 U18 Premier League.

However, Chelsea's youth team will end up with no trophies this season and the youngsters at the club are hoping the senior side can do the job in the last two games so that they can have a chance of winning the tournament for a third time.
