Why Chelsea fixture wasn't brought forward ahead of EFL Cup Final but Man City's was

As Manchester City strolled to a comfortable 2-0 victory over Everton last night, Chelsea fans may have been scratching their heads wondering why their team wasn't playing as well.

The two teams go head-to-head at Wembley later this month after reaching the EFL Cup final, which takes place on February 24.

With both City and Chelsea scheduled for Premier League action on that weekend, the games had to be postponed and rearranged.

But while the Blues' are yet to be given a date for their home fixture against Brighton, City were pencilled in for their trip to Goodison Park on Wednesday.

It was the ideal opportunity for Pep Guardiola's side to fit in the game, with a busy schedule including Champions League knockout ties and an FA Cup fifth round fixture to come.

Unfortunately for Maurizio Sarri's side, they were not afforded the same luxury because Brighton were forced to an FA Cup replay by West Brom, which they won 3-1 after extra time.

With the game still yet to be scheduled, Chelsea could face a nightmare pile-up of fixtures towards the end of the 2018-19 campaign.

It seems likely that the game could be squeezed in between the derby with Fulham on March 3 and the home game against Wolves a week later.

However, even that date could be affected if Chelsea progress further in the FA Cup and Europa League respectively.
