Why Chelsea can have a huge impact on the future of European football this week

Chelsea are one of a number of clubs involved in talks regarding changes to the Champions League and other competitions in the future.

The Blues are members of the European Club Association, who are this week in Amsterdam to debate proposals to the format of European competitions going forward.

Also set to be discussed is FIFA president Gianni Infantino's idea of a 24-team Club World Cup that would be held from June 17 to July 4 from 2021, as well as the potential launch of a third UEFA club competition from the start of the 2021/22 season.

Fellow Premier League teams Manchester United, Manchester City, Tottenham, Arsenal, Liverpool, Everton, Leicester City and Newcastle United are also members of the ECA and will be keen to get their views across regarding the potential changes.

A Champions League 2 has been proposed and possible promotion and relegation could also be involved in the European competitions.

Andrea Agnelli, the chairman of the ECA, stated that promotion and relegation were ‘natural’ in leagues across Europe and it ‘might be logical internationally’.

Agnelli, who is also the chairman of Italian giants Juventus, has revealed that discussions could take up to 18 months and no changes will take place prior to 2024 at the earliest, as the international structure is mapped out for the next five years.

Other suggestions include the major leagues in Europe to coordinate their fixtures alongside each other, fewer but longer international breaks throughout the season and the possibility of moving Champions League matches to weekends.

It has also been suggested that the Champions League group format switches from eight groups of four to four groups of eight.

The ECA's 22nd general assembly concludes on Thursday.
