Why Chelsea are interested in Dean Henderson transfer from Manchester United

Manchester United have a potential dilemma on their hands this summer, as Chelsea look to rebuild ahead of a return to the top of English football.

The Londoners have already secured the signatures of Timo Werner and Hakim Ziyech, and they are also linked with Kai Havertz and Leicester's Ben Chilwell.

Those names are almost certain to drastically improve the fortunes of the Blues on the pitch, yet the same question continues to be asked - what about the defence?

Frank Lampard's men have conceded the same amount of goals as 14th-placed Crystal Palace this season, with their figure of 49 being 20 more than the amount that Liverpool have shipped.

The MEN understands that Chelsea are willing to more than double the wages of Dean Henderson in order to convince him to move to the capital, with doubts remaining over the quality of Kepa Arrizabalaga..

The Spaniard has saved just 56.5 percent of the shots on target that he's faced, and he's underperformed his post-shot Expected Goals numbers by around 6.5 goals.

That essentially means that if a perfectly average goalkeeper had been deployed between the sticks at Stamford Bridge, Chelsea would be roughly six to seven goals better off on the defensive side of the game.

Kepa's shot-stopping has been below average and although it remains to be seen whether the Blues will actually look to replace him this summer, Chelsea's interest in Henderson doesn't bode well for the 25-year-old.

Henderson has spent the campaign representing Sheffield United due to the prominence of David De Gea at Old Trafford, so how does he compare to Kepa based on this season?

His shot-stopping has been significantly better. The English keeper has saved 76.2 percent of the shots on target that he's saved, which places him third in the division. Moreover, he's actually managed to overperform post-shot xG by about 7.4 goals in comparison to what the average goalkeeper would have prevented.

More time is needed before stating that Henderson is an above-average stopper, but overperforming expected numbers by around seven to eight goals - the third-highest in the league - is very encouraging.

De Gea, for perspective, has prevented 0.3 goals above his expected rate, which suggests that he's performed to a perfectly average standard this season. Not good, not bad, just adequate.

You could argue that if Henderson had played in goal for Chelsea this season, he would have saved an extra seven goals rather than conceding an additional six as has been the case with Kepa.

That is a 13-goal swing which is likely to have a massive impact on Chelsea's results and overall points total.

If Ole Gunnar Solskjaer fails to convince Henderson that his future lies in Manchester, then it could be a decision that comes back to haunt the club especially considering that he's six years younger than United's current No.1.
