Why Celtic can't let Eddie Howe choose director of football as Richard Hughes appointment branded 'lunacy'

Simon Jordan has warned Celtic against letting Eddie Howe choose their new director of football.

The Parkhead club are expected to appoint the ex-Bournemouth manager imminently after Record Sport reported he is in 'advanced talks' to replace Neil Lennon.

It is understood he wants to bring Cherries sporting director Richard Hughes with him to Celtic as part of a comprehensive rebuild.

Former Crystal Palace chairman Jordan, though, reckons the director of football should sit above the manager in the food chain.

He believes any appointment should be independent from the manager and able to call the shots without any bias towards the man on the front lines.

And as such, letting Howe choose who comes with him to the Scottish Premiership could be counter-productive.

Jordan said on talkSPORT : "I was just checking that I heard that right, that Eddie Howe wants to determine who the director of football will be.

"Isn't that a sort of juxtaposition? Why doesn't he choose which chief executive he wants to bring in and maybe the chairman as well?

"The director of football works for the club, he sits above the manager and not alongside the manager's requests for appointment.

"If that is the world we are going into, it is lunacy.

"Is he entitled to set out his terms? Sure, but only realistic ones.

"You can't sit there and suggest that the director of football is an appointment you make as a football manager."
