Why Carl Jenkinson is set to be denied an emotional Arsenal return in Carabao Cup tie

When Arsenal were drawn against Nottingham Forest in round three of the Carabao Cup, fans were looking forward to one thing.

The return of Carl Jenkinson at the Emirates Stadium.

Following eight years in north London, the full-back signed a three-year contract with Championship club during the summer transfer window after the two clubs agreed a fee for the 27-year-old.

After being confirmed as a Forest player, Jenkinson penned a heartfelt goodbye to the Gunners supporters.

"This is a message that is hard to write so I’m going to keep it short," he wrote on Instagram. "I’m leaving Arsenal in pursuit of a new challenge and a fresh start, and ultimately to play regular football again.

"I can’t really put into words what it has meant to me to play for this club, but what I can say is I have truly lived my dream.

"This brings me to you, the proper Arsenal fans, as I have lived your dream too.

"It has been an up and down journey for me but I hope you all have seen how much it has meant to me and know that I have given it my all.

"I have played 70 games for Arsenal which if you told me I would do as a kid I would’ve laughed at you. I take many great memories and friendships from my time at this special football club, and it is a chapter in my life that I will cherish forever.

"I see a great future for this club under the current manager and coaching staff, and I look forward to seeing this unfold. As for now, I’ll take my seat back in the stand, as a fan, with the rest of you.

"With love, Jenko."

It's possible that Jenkinson will be back in the stands on Tuesday night as he won't be able to take to the field at the Emirates against his former club.

Unfortunately this is because he is injured.

As reported by The Athletic earlier in the month, Jenkinson picked up a foot problem in the 1-1 draw against Preston North End before the international break and is expected to be out for a month.

Meaning the Arsenal game comes too soon for the right-back.

Prior to the injury setback, Jenkinson had made four appearances for Forest across all competitions and played 90 minutes of the round two win over
