Why Cardiff's defeat to Crystal Palace is great news for Arsenal

Arsenal host Brighton in their final home game of the season on Sunday.

And they do into the game knowing that only victory is good enough to keep their top four hopes alilve.

Tottenham's defeat to Bournemouth on Saturday opened the door for the chasing pack and the Gunners can go just one point behind their fierce north London rivals with a win on Sunday.

The battle for the final two places in next season's Champions League is going to go right down to the wire, despite Spurs looking like potential title challengers earlier in the season.

If their biggest rivals losing, and ending the game with only nine men, was not enough of a boost for Arsenal, they have been handed another one to boot.

The Gunners host the Seagulls at the Emirates, with the visitors safe in the knowledge that they will be playing Premier League football again next season.

Brighton have been nervously looking over their shoulders after a poor run of form, but those fears of relegation to the Championship have been put to bed ahead of the game between the two teams in north London on Sunday.

Huddersfield and Fulham have already suffered the drop, and they saw Cardiff become the third team to join them as they lost to Crystal Palace on Saturday evening.

That means Brighton have nothing to play for against Unai Emery's men and that could play into their hands as they attempt to end a run of three straight defeats in the league which put qualification for the Champions League out of their hands.
