Why can't you wear white after Labor Day?

September 6 is Labor Day in the US, a holiday that honours the American labour movement and contributions workers have made to society.

It isn't just a important holiday in the US, but a sartorial date for the calendar. Labor Day marks the last day in which you can wear white, as the season heads towards the winter months, or A/W as fashionistas call it.

Of course there is no rule enforced to stop the American public from wearing white, but according to fashion guidance you might be breaking a law of style.

Why is wearing white after Labor Day faux pas?

During the Victorian era and into the 20th century, those wealthy enough to leave the city when temperatures soared and retreat to their country getaways, swapped their heavy formal attire for linen suits and light bright whites.

After summer was finished, the middle and upper classes would flock back to the cities for autumn.

However, before re-entry, they made sure to swap their 'vacation whites' for darker hues.

Valerie Steele, director of the Museum at the Fashion Institute of Technology, told Time magazine that the tradition has deep classism in its roots.

"It [was] insiders trying to keep other people out and outsiders trying to climb in by proving they know the rules." Steele said.

This could have been an attempt to divide old money elites from the socially mobile nouveau riche population in the 1950s.

Those still wearing whites after summer were seen as a little bit gauche by the fashion conscious elite, who could afford a new winter wardrobe.

Nowadays there is no such shame in wearing white after Labor Day, but it took some work by Coco Chanel to challenge the rule observed by many Americans.

In the 1920s the designer made white a year-round staple of sartorial elegance but received opposition at the time.
